Some use online translation services like Google Translate or Translate.ru. Are they trustworthy and are they enough for a student? Well, let us see into that.
Another thing to test today is the online dictionaries. Which is better and for what purposes? - We are to answer.
Task 1
We are going to work with three online translation sites:
translate.google.ru
Translate.ru
translate.yandex.ru
You will get a link to 5 excepts that you are to translate with the help of those sites. Compare the translations, then use them as a basis for your own translation. Which of the sites works the best?
Task 2
Study the sites of the three most popular online dictionaries (We do use Google translate like that, right?). What information do they give? Which site is the most attractive? the most convenient?
www.lingvo-online.ru/ru
www.multitran.ru
translate.google.ru
Use them to translate a set of words and phrases you will get in the class.
Give each site a point if you find:
- No adverts at the site
- Attractive design
- Fast work
- Transcription
- Pronunciation audio
- Definitions
- Antonyms
- Synonyms
- Idioms with the word
- Idioms translations
- Example collocations and phrases
- Example sentences
- Option “to add a translation”
- Translations for specialized areas/industries
- Abbreviations
Now count the total and name the winner.
At Home
- Study words about dictionaries at Quizlet
- Get acquainted with Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary Online
- Publish a post with your opinion about each of the dictionaries you worked in the classroom and at home.
